What Life Insurance Actually Does
— and Who Needs It
Life insurance does one job at its core: it replaces the money you would have earned if you were still alive. If anyone depends on your income — a spouse, kids, a business partner — and you don't have enough saved to cover their needs without you, you need life insurance.
The question isn't IF you should have it. It's how much, what kind, and for how long.
of U.S. adults have no life insurance
And most who do are underinsured — typically 1-2x their annual income covered, when 10-15x is the standard rule of thumb for families with dependents.
Who actually needs life insurance
Anyone with dependents
Spouse, kids, aging parents you support, or anyone whose lifestyle depends on your income.
Anyone with a mortgage or debt
Co-signed loans or joint mortgages don't disappear when you die — they continue, owed by your family.
Business owners
Partners need to buy out your share. Employees need continuity. Personal guarantees on business debt follow your estate.
Parents of young children
Even stay-at-home parents — the cost of replacing their labor (childcare, household management) is real and large.
Estate planning candidates
Permanent life insurance can fund estate taxes, equalize inheritance among children, or leave a tax-free legacy to heirs.
Who probably doesn't need it (yet)
Single, no dependents, no significant debts, no business obligations? You may not need it right now. The exception: locking in a small policy while young + healthy can save you 5-10x the premium if you need to add coverage later when your health has changed.
