Subsidies + Tax Credits —
What You Actually Qualify For
Two different ACA subsidies most people don't know exist or confuse with each other: Premium Tax Credits (PTCs) and Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs). PTC lowers your monthly bill. CSR lowers your deductible, copays, and out-of-pocket max. They stack.
Many marketplace plans cost zero per month with full subsidies
Households at or below 150% of FPL often qualify for premiums at $0. CSRs on top can drop deductibles to under $1,000 for Silver plans. Most people who'd qualify don't know it.
Premium Tax Credits (PTC)
Reduces your monthly premium directly. The lower your income, the bigger the credit. As of 2024 (IRA expansion), the credit caps your premium at a percentage of household income — between 0% and 8.5% depending on bracket.
You can take the credit advance (lowers monthly bill) or claim it on your tax return. Most people take it advance. Get income too high and you may owe back what you took. Get it too low and you may get a refund.
Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSR)
Reduces your out-of-pocket costs — deductible, copays, coinsurance, max out-of-pocket — once you actually use the plan. Available only to households under 250% of FPL.
CRITICAL: CSRs ONLY apply to Silver plans. Choose Bronze and you lose them entirely. For most low-to-middle income households, this makes Silver effectively cheaper than Bronze despite a higher sticker premium.
The reconciliation surprise
Subsidies are based on PROJECTED income for the year. If your actual income comes in higher than estimated, you may have to pay back excess subsidies when you file taxes. Higher than projected by $10K can mean a $1K-$3K tax bill surprise. Update healthcare.gov when your income changes — don't wait until April.
